How You Can Help When Your Home Requires Smoke And Fire Damage Restoration In Daytona Beach

After an event that causes damage to a home, it is natural for the property owners to want to try cleaning the mess themselves. Unless they use the correct tools, cleaning agents, and methods, this can make things worse, instead of better. There are some activities that you can use, though, in your home in Daytona Beach to produce positive results.

As difficult as it might seem, avoiding excessive walking through your Daytona Beach home prevents smoke and fire damage from worsening. Smoke particles can descend deeper with each footstep and cut into carpet backing that we might have previously saved. Setting boxes or other heavy items on upholstered furniture can also work soot more deeply into furniture and make for more work-intensive restoration later.

If your goal is to strip the soot off of something, concentrate on metal fixtures first. Highly polished items like these can become permanently marred by the corrosive nature of soot. Even when soot feels dusty and dry, or greasy and smooth, the microscopic particles quickly ruin shiny, smooth surfaces.

Removing soot from the bathroom fixtures on tubs and sinks, as well as their equivalents in the kitchen, can help keep them from becoming eyesores. For dry soot, use a brush and a soft cloth. When soot clings to surfaces, use some mild soap mixed with water on a cloth. After you clean something, spray some light cooking spray on the metal to protect it from still-airborne soot.
You can also clean any plants that survived. Wash both sides of each leaf and the trunk or stems. You might want to check on the top of the soil for foreign debris. Heavy soiling of soot and ash might necessitate a change of potting mix.

Your refrigerator and freezer also might need cleaning on the inside. If electricity no longer works in your home, removing the items inside, wiping surfaces down, and propping doors open can mean the difference between a fresher-smelling appliance when you move back in and one you would rather throw away and never see again, instead.

SERVPRO of North Daytona Beach / Ormond Beach encourages residents to use these tips after a fire event leaves their belongings covered in soot and ash. Fire damage can seem overwhelming. We have additional tips that you might find useful in starting the mitigation your house needs. Call us at (386) 677-9993 for expert assistance in Holly Hill, Mound Grove, and National Gardens.
