Fire Damage In Daytona Beach

How SERVPRO Helped a Daytona Beach Attic to Not Smell Like Fire Damage

Fire damage cleanup is a multi-layered process even when there is no structural damage. Soot is unhealthy to breathe and has the potential to be an irritant. Plus, the odor from a home fire remains until it gets removed through the removal of the smoke residue on surfaces.

A Daytona Beach attic had fire damage, and although the fire department extinguished the blaze rapidly and almost no damage to the building materials in the attic occurred, it needed cleaning from soot and smoke residues over a wide area.

Collection of Insulation
Fiberglass insulation often has the potential for cleaning and reuse when it gets wet from a water loss event. However, it cannot return to a state for reuse after contamination from soot. The SERVPRO techs used a vacuum with a bag attachment to collect the insulation for disposal.

Improving Air Quality Measures
During mitigation from fire loss in the attic, the techs set up containment to diminish the chances of any cross-contamination to the rest of the home. They also deployed numerous hydroxyl generators to recombine the pungent odors into non-odorous compounds and eliminate the residual smoke odors remaining in the space.

Cleaning Away Soot and Smoke Damage
Different kinds of residues require diverse cleaning methods, and that is why the SERVPRO techs test before cleaning. They determined much of the deposits on the walls and ceilings in the attic was dry smoke and needed cleanup using specialized sponges that do not use any type of liquid cleaner to pick up the mess. Once the initial cleaning completed, the techs used their professional-quality formulas to wipe down surfaces.

Prepping the Attic for Reuse
The techs painted the walls with a primer with both a sealant for odor and stain covering properties to ensure the attic had a clean slate. This action prepped the walls and ceiling for a fresh coat of paint to return the attic to its pre-fire condition.
